May of us are familiar with the figures of Lucifer and Ahriman as portrayed by Rudolf Steiner’ in his sculpture, the Representative of Humanity. There, both beings are held in balance by the shining figure of the Christ Being, a mediating, balancing force to the extremes of the luciferic and ahrimanic in human nature. The spectre of Ahriman shadows us in technology, especially AI-driven technology, whereas Lucifer seems more an eternal archetype of Satan and temptation, than a current concern.

Yet the motif of the Soul of our 5th Post-Atlantean epoch above shows both Lucifer and Ahriman irretrievably enmeshed, locked face-to-face. Do we really understand their interwoven relationship and role in contemporary life? That where one being is, the other is also always present? As a counterpart?

Steiner’s Lucifer and Ahriman motif, part of his Training Sketches for the Artist, is our starting point in this course, but he provides the artists with at least three other representations of this duo, each one providing different insights into the nature of these two forces, which we will also explore.

And then there is the great figure mediating these two forces – the Christ, the Representative of Humanity. This course is not just about polarities, but also how we might work in painting with the face, the being of Christ.

This online masterclass in painting and drawing over seven fortnightly sessions explores these motifs through their gestures, meanings and role in our soul/spiritual evolution with painting, readings, discussion, and contemplation.

What are Steiner’s Training Sketches?

The Training Sketches can be seen as ‘picture seeds’ and were given to the artists in answer to a request from the painter Henni Geck for a new impulse in art. Henni Geck (1884-1951) was the first painter to use these indications.

Selected readings by Rudolf Steiner complement the practical work.
